Keller ISD is considering a long-term plan to close three intermediate schools and one elementary school to save the district at least $51.6 million.
KISD's Long Range Planning and Citizens Bond Advisory committees discussed the plan at a joint April 2 meeting. If the plan moves forward and is approved by the Keller ISD board of trustees, it would take effect for the 2027-28 school year.
The gist
District officials are considering the closure of the following intermediate schools:
- Bear Creek Intermediate School
- Parkwood Hill Intermediate School
- Trinity Meadows Intermediate School
The intermediate school closures would create uniform grade configurations, according to a district news release. All elementary schools would have students through fifth grade, middle schools would have sixth grade through eighth grade and high schools would start at ninth grade.
Currently, the district has this model implemented for students in the Fossil Ridge High School feeder pattern.
Intermediate school closures would also lead to attendance boundary changes for some schools. Whitley Road Elementary School and Liberty Elementary School students would now attend Indian Springs Middle School to balance enrollment and limit staff movement, according to the district. Additionally, some Independence Elementary School students would now go to Timberview Middle School.
Also of note
The district is also considering closing Shady Grove Elementary School to improve district efficiency. Shady Grove has an estimated $5.9 million more in capital needs than neighboring schools, according to the district. Students attending this school would be reassigned to nearby campuses and other elementary school boundary changes may be needed to further balance enrollment.
The district estimates 4,000 of its 30,000 students, or roughly 13%, would be impacted by the current plan. Staff is not expected to see an immediate impact and existing employees are expected to have positions within the district, regardless of school closures.
Looking ahead
The current plan from the two committees must be presented to the district’s board of trustees for consideration.
The board will have a special meeting April 8 to discuss its budget and conduct a facility study. The next joint meeting for the two committees is currently scheduled for April 14 at the district’s education center.
