A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Aug. 13 for the Keller Public Library Sensory Room.

“The room was installed to help individuals develop and engage their senses,” Keller Public Library Director Ann Flournoy said in an email. “Interaction with the type of equipment in our room is especially beneficial for children with limited communication skills, the various sensory needs that accompany autism or sensory processing disorders, and a wide range of other sensitivities.”

The Sensory Room is available for hour-long, single-family bookings on Wednesday afternoons. Families will can interact with the various sensory equipment, including:
  • Vibrating chair
  • Busy board
  • Touch panels
  • Light wall
  • Water tube
  • Different types of seating
“When used appropriately, sensory rooms help create a safe space where users can find opportunities to develop de-escalation, resilience, recovery and self-care skills,” the library’s website states.

Appointments can be booked by library cardholders by calling the reference desk at 817-743-4840 or by email at [email protected].

This project was fully funded by a private grant and fills a previously unused space.
