Westlake Academy, which uses the International Baccalaureate curriculum, is owned and operated by the town of Westlake. It is the only municipally owned and -operated open-enrollment charter school in the state of Texas, according to the school's website.
According to town documents, the overarching change in the calendar is making the fall student holiday line up with Columbus Day.

“There was an earlier draft that had Oct. 13 and 16 off,” Communications Manager Erin Spicer said. “This in part was because Northwest ISD released their calendar with those dates off. When staff looked at the other surrounding districts, what had been done in the past and what made sense with instructional timelines, it was decided to provide the days off aligning with Columbus Day.”
Spicer went on to say the earlier draft of the calendar didn’t have a date for senior commencement, but the adopted calendar has a date of June 1.
“The only other changes were new teacher orientation dates,” Spicer said. “The first draft had them as Aug. 4 and 7, but they will be on Aug. 3 and 4.”
