Northwest ISD announced the district is closing all schools and facilities Feb. 24 due to winter weather.

The district wrote in a Feb. 23 email that the closure comes “because of inclement weather and anticipated poor road conditions.” In addition to all schools and facilities closing, all Feb. 24 activities will be canceled or rescheduled.

Previously, Northwest ISD announced around 10 a.m. that all after-school activities Feb. 23 will either be canceled or rescheduled due to winter weather.

A winter storm warning is in effect through Feb. 24 from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex up to the Red River, according to the National Weather Service, causing sleet and ice that will “result in hazardous driving conditions.”

According to the email, the district hopes to resume classes Feb. 25.

Northwest ISD has already used its two allotted bad weather days and adjusted its calendar because of a two-day winter storm shutdown Feb. 3-4 as well as closures Jan. 14 and 18 due to COVID-19 spread and staffing shortages. State law requires school districts to have at least 75,600 minutes of instruction per school year.

Due to state law, the district is submitting a calendar waiver request to the Texas Education Agency. If granted, no further calendar changes would be required.

“Please stay safe and warm as we look forward to the return of students after this closure,” the Feb. 23 email said.
