H-E-B, which recently opened a location in Alliance Town Center, announced a recall due to possible Listeria contamination from supplier BrucePac.

According to a news release, the recall, which was first issued Oct. 9, was expanded on Oct. 11 with additional products. The items subject to recall bear establishment numbers 51205 or P-51205 inside or under the USDA mark of inspection. H-E-B customers can click here to see the current product list.

The details

The news release states BrucePac, which is headquartered in Durant, Oklahoma, is recalling approximately 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes. The ready-to-eat meat and poultry items were produced from June 19 to Oct. 8. These products were shipped to other establishments and distributors nationwide, then distributed to restaurants and institutions.


According to the news release, the problem was discovered after USDA performed routine testing of BrucePac products and confirmed those ready-to-eat items were positive for Listeria monocytogenes. A subsequent USDA investigation identified BrucePac ready-to-eat chicken as the source of the Listeria monocytogenes.

The news release states consuming food contaminated with Listeria can cause listeriosis, which can result the following:
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches and headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion, loss of balance and convulsions
  • Diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms
Women who are pregnant can have a more severe reaction to Listeria infection, which can cause:
  • Miscarriages
  • Stillbirths
  • Premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn
Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care, according to the news release.
