The overview
Kimley-Horn presented traffic findings for the past five years to Colleyville officials and recommended changes to the intersections of Martin Drive and Martin Parkway and Bedford Road and Bedford Court based on their data.
At the intersection of Cheek-Sparger Road and Bedford Road/Bedford Court, Kimley-Horn recommended adding a roundabout with a westbound right-turn lane turning onto Bedford Road. The additional right-turn lane may be added later after traffic increases, said Lucy Cunningham, a member of the project team at Kimley-Horn.
A traffic light is recommended for the intersection of Cheek-Sparger Road and Martin Drive/Martin Parkway. A neighborhood screening wall on the east side of the intersection left little room to construct a roundabout at this intersection, Cunningham said.
What's next?
The roundabout off Bedford Road and Bedford Court is estimated to cost between $1 million and $1.4 million. The traffic lights off Martin Drive and Martin Parkway could cost between $600,000 to $650,000.
Amber Beard, the public works director, said that the city received funding from Commissioner Gary Fickes for about $500,000 and city officials sent in an application for a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation for just under $1.4 million. They expect to hear back from TXDOT in May or June.
The background
In the past five years, there were three crashes reported at the Bedford Road and Bedford Court intersection, with one of those crashes being intersection related. At the Martin Drive and Martin Parkway intersection, 23 crashes were reported in the past five years, with 21 caused by the intersection, Cunningham said.
