Southlake residents can expect traffic changes as the North White Chapel Boulevard at Kirkwood Branch project gets underway.

The details

A complete closure of the road between the Camp Burnett entrance and Bluestem Drive began Aug. 21.

Construction crews will raise the elevation of the roadway and construct a pedestrian pathway on the west side, according to city documents. The project’s scope also includes roadway, bridge, sidewalk and water line improvements.

The backstory

In September 2018, a flood event damaged the culvert crossing at Kirkwood Branch, according to city documents. Temporary repairs were made to the bridge in early 2019 with the intention of a more “robust” project completed in the future, city documents state.

“Residents may recall in 2018 when storm waters flooded the bridge, causing it to close so the city could make necessary temporary repairs,” Public Works Director Rob Cohen said in a news release. “This [project] is a permanent solution designed to raise the roadway so it won’t be overtopped in the future.”

A contract for construction with Dallas-based Rebcon LLC was approved by Southlake City Council on June 20. The $6.9 million project is funded by the city’s capital improvement program.
