Southwest Airlines officials are interested in expanding to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

What’s happening?

Southwest’s CEO and President Bob Jordan shared at a Nov. 1 aviation forum that the airline has engaged with the DFW Airport about installing a “potential modest presence.” Southwest currently operates out of the Dallas Love Field Airport, about 15 miles away from DFW Airport.

“We have engaged in preliminary conversations with DFW International Airport to further serve customers throughout the area,” a statement from Southwest says.

The background

The statement from Southwest cites expansion as the primary reason for pursuing talks with DFW Airport. Love Field is limited to 20 gates, 18 of which Southwest operates from. DFW Airport has 168 gates and is constructing more with a new terminal. Southwest plans to continue operating out of Love Field, according to the statement.

“Southwest’s top focus in the DFW region is ensuring our long-term future at Dallas Love Field, from where we’ve served our loyal customers, grown our headquarters and invested in the Greater Dallas community for more than 52 years,” the statement says.
