Community members will have an opportunity to tour the new Colleyville Recreation Center on Sept. 21.

The city will host an open house of the facility from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The center is located at 5008 Roberts Road.

The details

The new $10 million center will provide the city with its own gym space. The Colleyville Parks and Recreation Department currently coordinates programs with Grapevine-Colleyville ISD to use school gyms and other facilities.

The property is nearly 15 acres and includes 10 acres of open space, a primary structure and a secondary smaller building, according to city officials. However, it does not have an aquatics center or a fitness center with workout equipment, and there are no plans to add those elements.

The backstory

Colleyville has been looking at providing a recreation center for residents since the 2018 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan showed the community wanted more recreational options.

In 2022, Colleyville City Council voted to purchase the former Covenant Church and the surrounding 15 acres for $8.5 million after church officials expressed interest in selling the property to the city. The city plans to spend an additional $1.5 million on renovations.

The purchase was funded with certificates of obligation. The projected debt schedule is for a 20-year period but could be paid off as early as in seven years, according to city officials.

Also of note

The center will not have membership fees for Colleyville residents, according to city officials.
