Tarrant County Public Health announced the first confirmed human case of West Nile Virus in the 2024 season on July 13.

The details

The individual involved contracted the more serious neuroinvasive form of the disease, according to the county. Additional details are not being released to protect the identity of the patient.

Symptoms for the neuroinvasive form of West Nile, a form of the disease that can be deadly, include:
  • neck stiffness
  • stupor
  • disorientation
  • coma
  • tremors
  • convulsions
  • muscle weakness
  • paralysis
The mild form of the disease, which is more common, is referred to as West Nile fever, according to the county. Symptoms include headache, fever, muscle and joint aches, nausea and fatigue, according to a news release.

Public Health announced the first positive mosquito sample in 2024 was reported in May 14 in the city of Arlington.


For the 2023 season, Tarrant County Public Health reported 12 human cases of West Nile disease, according to a news release.

What else?

The county has a mosquito dashboard map that shows where mosquito traps have tested positive or negative for West Nile Virus and/or St. Louis Encephalitis, according to a social media post. As of July 18, there have been 238 positive tests—an addition of 69 cases in a week’s span.
