During its Nov. 19 meeting, Grapevine City Council approved an ordinance regarding mobile food units, or food trucks, creating enforceable standards for MFUs to operate in the city.

The impact

The ordinance establishes a clear outline limiting where food trucks are permitted to park and how long the they are allowed to be there. It also includes cleanliness standards and permits required for operation.

The changes made to the ordinance requires MFUs to:
  • Have food handlers cards for all employees
  • Own a food establishment permit issued by the city’s designated health authority and fire prevention office
  • Remain 300 feet away from a school unless during a private event where they must have a temporary use permit
  • Operate in non-residential spaces only with written permission from the property owner alongside a valid Certificate of Occupancy
  • Remain in good working order, clean and well-maintained in appearance with no offensive material displayed
  • Clean the event location with all trash, tables and chairs removed
This is not a comprehensive list of the amendments added to the ordinance, but shows highlights the city included.

The backstory

Previously, Grapevine had only required mobile food units to undergo health inspections from the local health authority. The ordinance outlined how ice cream trucks would operate in the city without additional laws for other food trucks.

The item was tabled at the Nov. 5 city council meeting because council members requested clarification and additional amendments to the ordinance.
