Kimzey Park in Colleyville will get a revamped look after City Council approved a contract for a new playground during the March 19 meeting.

Playground Boss from Plano was awarded the winning bid for $348,311 for two new structures. One will have a slide for children ages 5 to 12 and the other a slide for children ages 2 to 5.

There will also be a swing set with four bays, that include infant seats and a spot where adults and children can swing together.

The background

Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Escobedo said the previous playground is more than 20-years-old. When a part was needed for a replacement, the manufacture of the current playground said it no longer makes replacement parts. Escobedo said the current playground is often unusable after rain showers.

The proposal also includes shade structures, and a new playground surface will be poured with drainage to help mitigate the impact of rain.

Kimzey Park was part of the 2023-24 capital improvement projects for the parks department, she said.

What’s next

Escobedo said the lead time would be about six to eight weeks before the company could install the new equipment. She said the installation will happen when it is warmer to help navigate the park's usage during busy periods in the spring.

Escobedo said the city will work with the Ross Downs Home Owners Association on the best timing to install the the equipment.

City Manager Jerry Ducay said the city will work with the Parks and Recreation Department to check on the feasibility of donating the existing equipment to another town that would be interested.
