At the July 19 council pre-meeting, Colleyville City Council members and city staff met to discuss the viability of a community garden in Colleyville.

According to a survey that was taken between March 4 and April 8, a majority of survey takers wanted a community garden. However, more than half of the survey takers said they were not interested in working in an unpaid leadership role for the garden.

Council members said the project is at a standstill until an individual or organization from the community shows interest in leading the garden and presents a proposal for the garden.

“I’m pro-garden, but I think in order for it to be successful it requires [a leader that is] passionate and people willing to own it,” Mayor Richard Newton said.

Another topic of discussion was if the garden should be on public or private property.

“If something like this were to happen, my personal belief is it should be [on private property] but managed by the public,” Council Member Nancy Coplen said. “Compass Church has a lot of land and they already have water, and I could see a private group or organization using that property.”
