The details
According to a news release from the two schools, Tarrant County College students with at least a 2.25 GPA will be guaranteed admission to Texas State's San Marcos and Round Rock locations.
The news release cites the rising cost of higher education as one of the reasons to streamline the transfer process. More students are trying to save money by starting out at a community college, then they transfer to a four year school once they earn their associate's degree.
Students can save up to $10,000 each year by starting out at TCC, then transferring to Texas State, according to the release.
“We know many Texans face an affordability crisis, and we’re proud to provide them access to earn an affordable first-class higher education,” TCC Chancellor Elva LeBlanc said. “Our collaboration with Texas State reflects a determination that our transfer students have a solid bridge to another post-secondary institution where they can continue their education and earn a bachelor’s degree.”
Breaking it down
TCC students with at least a 2.25 GPA may start the transfer process now. They can enroll in Texas State this spring and start their classes as soon as the summer, according to the release.
"As a proud graduate of a community college, I believe that student success is a collective responsibility of all areas of higher education," Texas State President Kelly Damphousse said. "That’s why TXST is honored to partner with Tarrant County College to create clear, guaranteed pathways for students to achieve their academic goals close to home."
What else?
In January, Tarrant County College was awarded $280,000 in grants from The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The grants were provided through the board’s Texas Reskilling and Upskilling through Education grant program.
According to a THECB news release, the TRUE program supports the goals of the state’s strategic plan for higher education through the creation, expansion or redesign of workforce education and training credential programs in high-demand occupations.
