Two board of trustees positions are on the May 3 ballot in Carroll ISD for Place 6 and Place 7.

The details

The filing period closed at 5 p.m. Feb. 14, and without any opposition filing against them, Alex Sexton and Andrew Yeager will serve another term as Place 6 and Place 7 trustees, respectively.

Sexton was first elected to the board in May 2022. He is an Air Force veteran and business developer with more than 20 years of experience in project management and logistics.

Yeager was first elected to the board at the same time as Sexton and currently serves as vice president of the board. Yeager has resided in Southlake for eight years and is a media sales director and adjunct professor with a history of community involvement and leadership.

What the candidates are facing

School districts across the state are facing a funding crisis since state funding hasn’t increased since 2019.

To emphasize the importance of what board President Cameron Bryan called “continuing our fiduciary responsibility and commitment to our community” in light of possible on-going funding issues, Carroll ISD board members unanimously approved adding an annual balanced budget requirement to the district’s set of policies during their regular meeting Dec. 16. Future deficit spending would either need to be absorbed by fund balances or by asking CISD voters for a voter approved tax ratification election.

Sexton and Yeager will also need to help continue to steer the district as it faces three ongoing lawsuits:
  • The district’s lawsuit against the Office of Civil Rights
  • The district’s lawsuit against the Department of Education
  • The lawsuit from former Superintendent David Faltys against the district
