During their regular meeting Oct. 21, CISD board of trustees approved the installation of signage at each campus notifying the public about the presence of armed officers.

The details

Reading from a prepared statement, Board President Cameron Bryan said district officials continue to explore all available measures to ensure the safety and security of students and staff members on district campuses.

“Installing visible signs that alert potential intruders to the presence of armed officers on CISD campuses can serve as a strong deterrent,” Bryan said. “We’re sending a clear message that the safety of our community is our top priority.”

Superintendent Jeremy Glenn said Carroll ISD has taken similar measures that other school districts across the state have implemented in recent years to focus on security.

“[Defense is] done three ways—we deter, we deny and then we defend,” Glenn said. “Adding this signage is one more on that first layer of defense, which is deterring anyone from ever thinking they can come into our schools and take advantage of our students or staff.”

What else?

Glenn added the signage on each campus would include the following:
  • One sign at the street at the entrance to the school
  • A smaller sign at the ID verification station at the front doors where visitors check in with the front office
According to a city of Southlake website, school resource officers are provided at each CISD campus by the Southlake Police Department. The SRO program is funded primarily through the city's crime control and prevention district.

CISD Board members voted unanimously 5-0 to approve the signage. Board members Renee Bottom and Alex Sexton were absent from the meeting.
