Diving in deeper

There are two ways families may take advantage of GCISD's prekindergarten opportunity: one is state-based pre-K and the other is tuition-based pre-K.

According to the website, students can qualify for state-based pre-K if they meet one of the following criteria:
  • Their home language is something other than English.
  • They are currently, or have been, in foster care.
  • The family meets income criteria.
  • Their parents serve in the military.
The website states that a parent or guardian can contact the GCISD Language Assessment Center at 817-251-5231 or email [email protected] if their child meets one or more of these criteria.

For those students who do not meet the criteria for state-based pre-K, GCISD also offers a tuition-based pre-K program. Tuition-based programs are offered at all of the elementary schools listed above except for Dove Elementary.

The website states that parents or guardians can contact the district at [email protected] or 817-251-5944 to learn more about the tuition-based program.

Sorting out details

According to the district website, the pre-K program operates from 7:40 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. and follows the GCISD instructional calendar. Other important components of the pre-K program include:
  • All GCISD pre-K teachers are certified by the Texas Education Agency and receive professional development throughout the year.
  • Teacher-to-student ratios will not exceed 1-11.
  • The maximum number of students in each class is 22.
The district will follow the state of Texas prekindergarten guidelines. Examples of the curriculum resources used are Learning Without Tears, STEMscopes and Opening the World of Learning.
