Covenant Christian Academy was granted a right-of-way encroachment variance to construct a freestanding monument sign at the school in Colleyville.

During the city of Colleyville's June 20 meeting, council reviewed the application to install a sign at 901 Cheek-Sparger Road for the private school.

The context

The perpendicular sign was supposed be 15 feet from the edge of the street, but an amended version was approved during the meeting that it will be set back to 19 feet. In the process, the school will move a sidewalk back 4 feet as well. The new sign will sit between the entrance and exit driveways, according to a presentation.

The sign will be 11 feet in length and 5 feet, 6 inches tall with a digital message board that will be 4 feet tall and 8 feet in length.

The details

The school provided a list of six reasons why they asking for variance. City Engineer Larry Wright said the list provided was "very appropriate," and he agreed with the tree visibility issue along the roadway, as outlined below.
  • Due to culverts, sidewalks and parking space, this was the only place the sign could go.
  • The sign wouldn’t be visible as the property line shifts dramatically to the south away from the road.
  • Nearby businesses have perpendicular signs.
  • The location is where the school envisioned it would be when the master-plan construction is complete.
  • The current sign runs parallel to the street and makes it not visible.
  • Trees along Cheek-Sparger Road prevent visibility if the sign was to be built within city code.
The backstory

Covenant Christian Academy was formed in 1980. The school has classes from preschool through a college prep high school. There is also an after-school program and summer camps.
