Grapevine-Colleyville ISD will apply for class size waivers for nine classes that exceed the Texas Education Agency’s recommended 22 students per class.

Texas education code requires districts to submit for class size waivers should they have pre-K through fourth-grade classes that exceed the recommended amount of students.

The district has four kindergarten, two first-grade, three second-grade, one third-grade and two fourth-grade classes with 23 students in each class, according to a staff memo. There is also one second-grade class with 24 students, according to a request for waivers presented to the board of trustees at a Feb. 28 meeting.

The board voted unanimously to approve the recommended waivers for three kindergarten classrooms, four second-grade classrooms and two fourth-grade classrooms.

It is unclear why waivers for each classroom with more than 22 students were not recommended for waiver approvals. The district could not immediately be reached to explain.
