The breakdown
Owner Beth Newman made the announcement in a detailed Facebook post on Dec. 23. She said a new landlord announced at the beginning of 2024 planned to raise the rent and asked that she vacate the space at the end of the year.
Newman said she had financially vetted and approved buyers who were going to buy her business and enter under a new lease with the new landlord, but claimed the landlord later reneged the offer and went a different direction.
Newman said this was never communicated, which led to the restaurant's quick closing.
"I give immense thanks to everyone who has dined with us, whether you've been dining with us for years or recently found us," Newman wrote. "I am so humbled and grateful for your continued support, your loyalty is what kept me in business and I am truly honored to have served you."
The backstory
Mason & Dixie opened in 2017 and offered comfort favorites, such as paninis, soups, grilled cheeses, chicken salad, tuna salad and desserts.
The restaurant expanded in 2018 and gave back to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic by offering take-and-bake meals, according to previous Community Impact reporting.
