On Thursday officials from the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center, in conjunction with officials from the resort's owner, Ryman Hospitality Properties, broke ground on its $120 million expansion, called The Vineyard. Officials said the expansion could be finished as soon as the second quarter of 2018. "Like the Alamo, the Gaylord Texan has become one of the treasures of Texas," Grapevine Mayor William D. Tate said. "Over 10 million guests have come here for conventions since the opening day. The people of Grapevine are very proud to be a partner with this hospitality giant and to have a product of this magnitude as part of our large array of elite properties of hospitality of entertainment." Here are five things to know about the expansion:

1. 450 jobs will be created during the construction of the expansion, and 200-300 permanent jobs will be brought to the community once completed.

2. The expansion will add 303 guest rooms to the resort's current 1,511 room inventory. The rooms will be located on the top six floors above the ballroom and meeting space.

3. It also includes an addition of 86,000 square feet of carpeted meeting space, bringing the total meeting space to approximately 490,000 square feet.

4. Once the expansion is complete, Gaylord Texan will become the second largest convention center hotel not attached to a casino in the United States as measured by total self-contained exhibit and meeting space.

5. The carpeted meeting space includes a 30,000-square-foot ballroom, which will be called the Tate Ballroom after the Grapevine mayor.
