Pet Wants, a mobile pet food business anchored in Roanoke, will soon open a brick-and-mortar location in Trophy Club.

What's happening

Owners Charlie and Cora Baker expect to open April 1 in the location that formerly housed Popcorn Central.

A franchisee of the Cincinnati-based business, Pet Wants specializes in providing fresh, small batch, slow-cooked natural dog and cat food, natural chews and treats. The food does not include corn, wheat, sugar or other fillers, Charlie Baker said.

According to the website, high-quality salmon, duck, whitefish, chicken and lamb are used.

Cora Baker said they offer fewer steps from production to pet food bowls.

“The goal has always been to open a retail store as soon as possible,” Charlie Baker said. “We have done pretty well from a mobile and retail standpoint and have gathered a reasonable customer base. Now is the right time and right location.”

The backstory

The Bakers have sold pet food from their house as well as local farmers and artisan markets. Cora Baker said attending those markets helps land customers, as does word of mouth.

Pet food is sold by the pound, so customers can buy enough for a week or could buy a 40-pound bag, Cora Baker said. The brick-and-mortar store will allow Pet Wants to add grooming, pet training and additional retail product, Charlie Baker said.
