A proposed Club Car Wash in Grapevine was denied by both the Grapevine Planning and Zoning Commission and Grapevine City Council during a joint meeting Oct. 15.

The details

The company, based in Columbia, Missouri, and co-owned by Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, requested a conditional use permit to construct a car wash at 901 E. Ira Woods Ave. It would have been located on a 1.5-acre lot between Quiktrip and Chase Bank in what is now a vacant plot of land, according to a presentation.

The vote failed 6-1 in planning and zoning and council denied it 6-1, with Council Member Chris Coy being the lone yes vote for the car wash.

The setup

The car wash would have featured a 136-foot long, dual-lane drive-thru car wash and 22 spots for vacuuming, according to city documents.

Clay Christy with ClayMoore Engineering said there were plans for an equipment room, restroom, patron lobby, employee office, cashier and storage during the presentation.

He said a car can be moved into a queue every 30 seconds and each wash would take about three minutes to finish. Christy said the company viewed traffic patterns and usage at similar Club Car Wash locations in Plano, Garland and Fort Worth.

The approach

Grapevine Public Works Department employees had concerns about vehicle stacking, blocking customers from accessing and leaving QuickTrip to the north and Chase Bank to the south. Stacking onsite during peak weekday and weekend hours may cause entry and exit problems at the driveway on southbound William D. Tate Avenue, according to city documents.

Council Member Darlene Freed said she believed stacking would be a problem.

In their own words

Mayor William D. Tate also was worried about traffic backup from the car wash, as well as delays that could happen when Trinity Metro TEXRail trains pass through Ball Street and causes backups.

“I don’t think it’s a good site,” Tate said. “It is not a good location with that much activity.”
