Only a few months into 2023, Emily Aguilar is on pace for the best year yet for Bubbles and Marquee Events in Colleyville.

The business provides a mix of products and services to rent for parties and events, such as proms, weddings, graduations and birthdays. The spring, she says, is her busiest season with events booked out through the end of May already.

Bubbles comes from the champagne wall that is at most events. She also provides letters and numbers that are popular for events—and selfies.

The business originally started out of necessity for Aguilar and her family during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aguilar and her husband bought a house in Colleyville, and then her husband lost his job.

“I scrambled,” Aguilar said. “I was like, ‘What are we going to do?’”

People were still having weddings during the pandemic. She noticed people using big letter props for photos. That led to her buying four wooden letters that were 4 feet tall, spelling out “love,” for $1,200. She started bringing the letters and a beer bar to Stoney Ridge Villa wedding venue in Azle in 2020—when it was named Lone Star Bubbles & Brews. Now she has more than 140 letters.

Aguilar had experience working for Encore Live, a Fort Worth-based event planning company. She noticed a lot of big events had props that were just trashed because people just didn’t want to keep them.

“These props were built and made and it was crazy; they were phenomenal and people would just trash them afterwards because they were so massive,” Aguilar said. “So I wanted to have big items people would want at their event but didn’t want to hold on to them. I wanted to make it affordable for people.”

Photos and word of mouth followed, and then the request for more letters and numbers came along. She had three different storage units rented to store items for her growing business. In February 2022, she moved in next door to Jill Tuggle’s business, Partyology. They now work together at events.

“People started putting in orders faster than I could get them made,” Aguilar said. “[My letter and numbers] are more boutique; they are really handcrafted, and there’s a lot of love and time that goes into them.”

Bubbles and Marquee Events charges $55 per letter for a display.

“It’s been it’s been a wild ride,” said Aguilar, a native of Mansfield. “I never thought that I would own my own business but it’s been really fun.”
