Gun thefts last year in Frisco are just under the city’s five-year average, but the police department is urging residents to take extra care to secure firearms.

Police Chief David Shilson presented statistics on stolen firearms April 19 before Frisco City Council. A total of 50 guns were stolen in 2021, according to Shilson. An average of 52 guns have been stolen each year for the past five years.

Thirty-five of those 50 guns stolen in 2021 were stolen from a vehicle, according to Shilson’s presentation. A total of 23 guns were stolen from unlocked vehicles.

Shilson urged residents that while gun theft numbers have been higher in past years, residents should be “cognizant” of proper security. Curbing gun theft has been a priority in the department in recent years.

“I just want to remind the public [to] take care of your firearms, and make sure you secure them,” Shilson said. “We do not want guns in the hands of the wrong people.”
