June 14 was the last day for early voting in the June 18 municipal runoff elections. Polls will be open again from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. June 18.
As of June 13, 1,684 early votes had been cast in Frisco. During the May general municipal election, 11,505 early ballots were cast in Frisco, making it a 13.74 percent voter turnout.
Denton County elections administrator Lannie Noble said runoff elections tend to have a lower voter turnout because of lessened publicity and fewer candidates on the ballot.
“One of the main reasons is the reduced number of contests to be voted on,” Noble said. “If you have multiple races on the ballot there is a larger base of voters that might have a candidate to support by voting. What is on the ballot also affects turnout.”
During the May election, the ballot included an alcohol proposition and seven candidates vying for a seat on Frisco City Council. The June runoff election includes only four city council candidates.
A runoff election occurs when a single candidate does not receive the majority of votes; the two candidates with the highest number of votes during the general election will be placed on the ballot for a runoff election.
Shona Huffman and Terri Green for Frisco City Council Place 2 and Cindy Asche and Bill Woodard for Place 4 are running in the runoff election.
During the May election, Huffman received 48.85 percent of the votes in the general election, and Green received 34.93 percent of the votes. For Place 4, Woodard received 41.8 percent of the votes in the regular election, and Asche received 33.19 percent.
