The city of Frisco will spray four mosquito pools July 16 and 17 after the pools tested positive for West Nile virus. Spraying will take place from 9 p.m.-6 a.m. on both days.

These pools bring the total to eight pools this summer that have tested positive for West Nile virus in Frisco. There have been no confirmed human cases reported.

The city will conduct ground spraying in the Frisco Lakes neighborhood as well as several other neighborhoods south of Warren Parkway between Legacy Drive and the Dallas North Tollway, an area that had already been sprayed for mosquitos using backpack spraying at the beginning of this month.

Backpack spraying will also take place along the greenbelt areas in the Starwood neighborhood and on either side of Little Ranch Road between FM 423 and Teel Parkway.

“According to our city-contracted entomologist, every site is unique,” environmental health supervisor Julie Stallcup said in a news release. “Our contractors tailor their response to a positive West Nile virus trap site according to factors like population density and the size of the impacted area. In some situations, it’s more effective to conduct ground spraying. In other areas, like greenbelts, it’s best to directly target the trap site with backpack sprayers.”

There have been three confirmed cases of either West Nile fever or West Nile neuroinvasive disease in Texas so far this year, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. TDSHS recommends following four steps to avoid mosquitos:

  1. Wear insect repellent containing DEET.

  2. Drain standing water.

  3. Wear long sleeves and pants at dusk and dawn.

  4. Use air conditioning, and secure windows and screens.
