Frisco will receive more than half a million dollars in state funding to help prevent vehicle crimes, including catalytic converter thefts.

Frisco City Council approved a grant through the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority at its meeting Aug. 19. The funds are being administered through the Catalytic Converter Grant program.

The program is meant to fund projects to detect, disrupt and prevent motor vehicle crimes including catalytic converter theft, according to city documents.

The total grant award is $586,393 with a 20% match from the city, bringing the total funding to $703,672.


The money will help fund 102 license plate readers throughout the city. It will also be used to purchase technology and software to assist crime analysts and detectives in deterring, solving and preventing motor vehicle crimes in Frisco.

Frisco saw year-over-year increases in vehicle thefts beginning in 2020 and peaking in 2023, according to police documents. There were 223 reports of vehicle theft in 2023. The reports dropped to 164 in 2024.
