Frisco officials recommended approval for a development that could bring more than 700 more units to the city.

Frisco Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval of plans for a new mixed-use development called Champions at its meeting June 24. The development will be located on the southwest corner of Mahard Parkway and University Drive and could include housing, as well as office and retail space.

The details

The commission considered a proposal to rezone the property to allow for the development.

If given final approval by City Council, the development will include:
  • 700 urban living units
  • 74 townhomes
  • Office space
  • Retail space
It would all sit on 80 acres of land, which was originally planned for a development called Lesso Mall. This development didn’t come to fruition because the owner of the property sold the land. Lesso Mall was approved for up to 1,200 units on the site.

The development will be built in phases, contingent on building permits being filed for the office buildings and parking garages planned on the site.

The new development will generate half the traffic as the development previously planned for the property, according to city staff.

What they’re saying

Commission Chair Jon Kendall said people may be reluctant to see more apartments coming to Frisco but that the Champions project will take time to build.

“I hope people realize you don’t need to be scared when you see a zoning case like this,” Kendall said. “It’s just planning for the future.”
