Frisco City Council members discussed the latest designs, trail layout and potential changes for Northwest Community Park during a Feb. 20 work session meeting.

The main direction from council members was to gather additional information, Parks and Recreation Director Shannon Coates said.

City officials are hoping to nail down a few more details before the project goes out to bid.

“We would like to engage the community again,” Coates said. “We would like to make sure that we're not just capturing the biking community, but we're also capturing the running community.”

The project

The plans presented are the most recent version of the 100-acre project and include:
  • A dog park
  • Amphitheater lawn
  • Toddler playground
  • Food truck spaces
  • Bike skills track
  • Picnic areas
  • All-weather bike loop
  • Discovery garden
  • Prairie loop trail
  • Prairie lookout
  • Bike jump lines
  • Adventure playground
Council member Bill Woodard said he can get behind 99% of the project as-is but believes some aspects, such as the lookout tower and some of the bike trails, are not quite there.

“My 1% on this [is] I still think we should remove the tower ... [and] make what's out there more sustainable and help rejuvenate it,” Woodard said. “Let's spend the money on doing that.”

Another thing

Northwest Community Park went through a community input phase when the project was first announced in July 2020, Coates said.

“We did a community survey, and we received over 1,000 responses, which was really great,” Coates said.

The master plan for the park was adopted in mid-2021 and designers have been working on the project since. Barring any major design changes, bids for construction could still go out in April and within the park’s $40 million budget, said Conners Ladner, a principal with Design Workshop Inc.
