Richard Hayes is in the lead for the state Rep. District 57 seat with 46,657 votes, or 59.20%. Johnson has earned 29,862 votes, or 37.89% of the early vote, while Hamilton has earned 2,291 votes, or 2.91% of the early vote.

Denton County has released unofficial early voting totals showing Richard Hayes is in the lead for the state Rep. District 57 seat with 44,244 votes, or 59.13% of the vote.

What you need to know

Republican incumbent Hayes is running against Democrat Collin Johnson and Libertarian Darren Hamilton. Johnson has earned 28,520 votes, or 38.12% of the early vote, while Hamilton has earned 2,056 votes, or 2.75% of the early vote.

Hayes has been appointed by Denton County and the city of Denton to local and regional boards, including North Texas Mobility Corporation. He is a past chair of the Denton Chamber of Commerce and a past president of the Denton Kiwanis Club. He currently serves on the board of directors of the North Texas State Fair & Rodeo Association.


Johnson has experience as an entrepreneur, investor and business owner. He has served as the Planning and Zoning Commissioner for the Town of Hickory Creek and volunteered for the Denton County Office of History and Culture.

Hamilton’s experience includes working as a data analyst, statistician and database engineer. He is also a former U.S. Marine.

More than 248,000 in-person and mailed-in ballot votes were cast in Denton County ahead of the Nov. 5 election, according to the county’s election office. Of the 248,342 ballots received, 8,893 were ballots returned by mail between Sept. 30-Oct. 27, according to Denton County election data. Denton County has 664,288 registered voters, according to the county’s website. The early voting ballots cast represent a 37% voter turnout.
