For the first time, a Frisco ISD high school will compete in the 6A division for sports.
What's happening?
FISD’s high schools will be split between three University Interscholastic League districts for most sports during the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years. The UIL announced its 2026-28 district realignment, which determines each Texas high school's athletic conference for the next two years, on Feb. 2. The released alignments are for volleyball, basketball and football.
Alignments for all other events will be released at a later date, according to UIL.
The background
UIL classifies schools into conferences based on campus enrollment. Conference 6A schools have an enrollment of 2,215 or more, according to the UIL. Conference 5A includes high schools with between 1,305 and 2,214 students enrolled.
Wakeland High School has moved up from the 5A class and will compete in District 5 of the 6A Division. The school had 2,245 students as of Oct. 31, when campus enrollments were submitted to UIL.
The breakdown
Wakeland will compete against Denton-Braswell, Denton-Guyer, Lewisville, Lewisville-Flower Mound, Lewisville-Hebron, Lewisville-Marcus and Little Elm high schools. Football divisions for 6A schools are determined by playoff qualifiers, according to FISD.
For basketball and volleyball, 11 of FISD's schools will compete in the 5A Class. This is split between District 6-5A, which includes Lone Star, Panther Creek and Reedy high schools, and District 11-5A, which includes:
- Centennial
- Emerson
- Frisco
- Heritage
- Independence
- Lebanon Trail
- Liberty
- Memorial
UIL splits enrollment classifications for football into two divisions for 1-5A schools. Centennial, Heritage, Lebanon Trail, Liberty, Lone Star and Reedy high schools will compete in District 5 of 5A Division I. In Division II of 5A, the following schools will compete within District 4: Frisco, Emerson, Independence, Memorial and Panther Creek.
Competing in multiple UIL districts allows for more playoff opportunities for FISD students, as each UIL district has four spots for teams, according to a district news release.
