Sr. Ozzy’s Taco Y Mariscos owner Armando Duran said he decided to open the restaurant, which had been his dream, following encouragement from his son.

The backstory

Duran opened the restaurant in May 2023. Prior to opening, Duran said he had a career in public works, but his dream was to open a Mexican restaurant in Frisco.

Duran said he encouraged his son to follow his dreams while playing baseball in college. In response, Duran’s son encouraged him to open the restaurant.

“I had 1,000 reasons not to,” Duran said. “I was happy with my career, but finally, I was like, ‘OK, let’s do it.’”

In addition, Duran said he wanted to provide the community with authentic Mexican food. Frisco is also a destination city in North Texas, thanks to the PGA relocation and the upcoming World Cup, he said.

What’s on the menu?

The restaurant has a number of popular taco options such as the quesataco de birria de res, which features melted cheese and brisket. Other dishes include the mar y tierra, which Duran described as a “surf and turf” style taco with shrimp, beef, onion, tomato, chipotle dressing and cheese, and the Sonoran dog, a bacon wrapped hot dog with mustard, ketchup, grilled onions, beans, tomato, cotija cheese, guacamole and cream of mayonnaise.

What’s special about it?

Duran said the restaurant doesn’t serve Tex-Mex but authentic Mexican street tacos. Along with tacos, the restaurant also offers seafood and Mexican sushi, a fusion of Mexican and Japanese flavors.

“A lot of places in Mexico will either do tacos or seafood but never both,” Duran said.

All of the sauces, including the salsa rojo and tomatillo salsa, are made in-house. In addition, Duran said staff uses a variety of chilis and spices to ensure each dish has traditional Mexican flavors.

Duran said patrons go on an adventure of sorts when they order from Sr. Ozzy’s.

“Most people, the first time they [eat here], they start with the tacos,” Duran said. “Then they try the Sonoran hot dog and venture on into the Mexican sushi and finally have the seafood.”
