After spending more than a decade delivering authentic Chinese food to Dallas, restaurant owner Grace Zhao has brought her skills home to Frisco for one vital reason: The area needed a good Chinese restaurant, she said.

Since its opening in 2020, Frisco’s Zhao Star China Bistro has become just that and more.

“I think there’s no restaurant like us,” said Zhao, who also owns Ming Place China Bistro in Dallas.

Like its sister location, Zhao Star China Bistro’s food is high quality, flavorful and healthy, Zhao said. The menu mixes her family’s take on American Chinese dishes and original home recipes, she said. Whereas some chain Chinese restaurants tend to stick to the same limited menu, Zhao Star China Bistro takes pride in developing something new, Zhao said.

“I can tell you, our orange chicken is the best in the Dallas area, and our Mongolian beef is a top ... seller, and people love it,” she said.

While both of Zhao’s restaurants are born from the same flavors and dedication to quality, the Frisco location has developed its own atmosphere, which caters more to families or patrons happy to slow down and enjoy the food and ambiance, Zhao said.

From her parents’ and grandparents’ enthusiasm for food to her family’s own restaurant business in China, Zhao grew up around a love of creating and sharing food. She said she still keeps her grandmother’s advice in mind: Make customers feel like the restaurant is their second home or their second kitchen. Zhao said she loves to share the Chinese culture she grew up with through her food.

“The people still don’t know much about China,” she said. “That’s what made me think I can make Chinese food, let the local people enjoy my food, ... and I can talk with them about the story of China.”
