Correction: This story has been updated to reflect that the city of Frisco will absorb $1 of the $3 rate increase.

Frisco City Council approved a rate increase for trash and recycling pickup during Tuesday's meeting.

Waste collection rates will increase by $3 per home per month in 2018 and by an additional $1 per home per month in 2019. The city will absorb $1 of the increase, so residents will only see a $2 increase in 2018.

The rate increases come as part of amendments to the city's agreement with Progressive Waste Solutions, which provides waste collection services for the city.

Representatives from Progressive met with city staff earlier this year to discuss concerns with the current contract. Progressive had invested millions of dollars in new equipment and hiring new employees in order to service the growing city, according to city documents.

As a result, Progressive requested that the city consider the rate increase among other changes to the agreement.

"Even with the rate change, we have quite a lower residential trash rate than Rowlett, The Colony, Little Elm, Richardson, Coppell, McKinney, Allen, Prosper and Plano," Mayor Pro Tem Will Sowell said.

The rate increase will take effect Jan. 1.
