Frisco City Council will discuss a controversial substation tonight, the Frisco Convention & Visitors Bureau has launched a new campaign and a dog park will be closed this week. Here are three things to know this week in Frisco.

1. Oncor appeals for substation location

Oncor has submitted an appeal to City Council for a specific use permit for a new substation, which Council will discuss during tonight's meeting. Frisco Planning and Zoning Commission denied Oncor's SUP request Aug. 23, and a vote from at least three-fourths of the Council or four votes (whichever is greater) is needed to appeal P&Z's decision.

The proposed substation is on the west side of Legacy Drive just south of Stonebrook Parkway. The substation would power the $5 billion mile which includes The Star, The Dallas Cowboys’ new headquarters, other developments and existing Oncor customers throughout the city.

The new proposed substation is needed to keep up with the power demand in Frisco, according to Oncor. Oncor serves Frisco with four substations and half of those are within city limits.

Residents showed up to the Aug. 23 P&Z meeting to express their opposition for the proposed substation location. Concerns ranged from public safety, the close proximity to Allen Elementary and health risks. One main concern was that homeowners received no indication that area could be used for utilities.

Oncor is in discussions with the city for an alternative location for the substation and plans to file an SUP for the alternative location Oct. 10.

2. Frisco CVB launches new campaign

Frisco CVB last week unveiled its revamped website, www.visitfrisco.com, and announced the launch of its new campaign, iHeartFrisco. iHeartFrisco allows visitors to see what residents like to do in Frisco by searching for #iHeartFrisco on social media or visiting www.iheartfrisco.com.

The iHeartFrisco website includes a compilation of photos of people dining in Frisco, attending a sports game and enjoying other activities within the city as well as a blog about things to do in Frisco.

"We've been trying to launch something local for a while to really get people to get out into the community and experience it," CVB Executive Director Marla Roe said. "Now we have a way of capturing their stories and their images through one portal."

3. Portion of Ruff Range dog park to be closed

The small dog area of the Ruff Range dog park will be closed this week as CoServ accesses a manhole for a utility upgrade, according to www.friscodogpark.org. The dog park is expected to reopen this weekend.

Ruff Range dog park, located at 5335 4th Army Memorial Drive, Frisco, includes a large and small dog off-leash area within the B.F. Phillips Community Park.
