Frisco City Council approved extending and expanding its contract with the Denton County Transportation Authority on Tuesday, allowing the demand-response transit service to begin offering rides into a portion of the city of Plano.
DCTA has been offering services for elderly and disabled Frisco residents since December 2015. Residents often requests rides from DCTA for work, to run errands or for medical visits. The service offers rides within Frisco, McKinney and Allen.
DCTA's contract with the city would have expired in December, but Council agreed to extend the contract through Nov. 30, 2017.
Council also supported a pilot taxi partnership program with DCTA. The pilot program will allow ambulatory passengers—those who do not need assistance—to receive a taxi ride when a shuttle is not available. Adding taxis to the transit service will allow any of the service vehicles to provide trips into Plano anywhere west of Coit Road, which is where a majority of medical services are available.
The fares and transit schedule will remain the same under the pilot program. Services are expected to begin in November.
