Owning a business was something that always seemed like it would make sense for Julie Ng, owner of Boba Latte.

She was raised spending time and working at her parents’ businesses, so it was natural for Ng to expect to own her own one day.

“I think, growing up seeing my parents’ business, that I figured at some point I would own some kind of business,” Ng said.

Ng said she decided she wanted to open a boba shop after tasting boba tea for the first time while on a family vacation. At this time she was in college.

When she got back from her trip she wanted boba tea again, but there was not anywhere in her area that offered it, she said.

“I came back and was craving boba, so I decided one of these days I would open up my own shop,” Ng said. “It’s been very fun.”

Ng opened up Boba Latte in Richardson in 2003, and she franchised her first location in Frisco three years ago.

“The Frisco location owner was actually one of the first people to ask us [about franchising], and I think he asked us persistently for about 12 years, ... so it made sense for him to be our first,” Ng said.

Even though owning a business was almost a given for her, Ng said she never expected to end up in the food industry because she does not cook, she said.

“I joke with my friends that the only thing I can cook is boba,” Ng said.

Boba Latte offers a wide range of drinks, including tea, smoothies, lattes, coffee and espresso. The store also serves several snack options.

Both Ng’s Richardson location and her franchised Frisco location offer the same menu and aim for an inviting feel for customers, she said.

“[We aim for] a friendly environment where people come in and can relax,” she said. “They can bring a book or their computer to do some work.”
