Marai Jimenez, owner of Frisco Taekwondo America, said she started practicing Taekwondo when she was in third grade.

“My brother did [Taekwondo], and I was able to kick him,” Jimenez said with a laugh. “I thought that was awesome. I really liked that aspect of it.”

Jimenez continued training in this traditional form of Korean martial arts throughout her childhood. As a teenager, she trained and worked at Lacy’s Elite Taekwondo in Frisco, which was formerly owned by Robert Lacy. Jimenez began managing the school in 2016 and bought it three years later.

She changed the business name to Frisco Taekwondo America for two reasons.

“I wanted it to reflect Frisco because I absolutely love Frisco,” said Jimenez, a 2013 graduate of Lone Star High School. She said she also wanted the name to signal the school’s membership with the national Taekwondo America organization.

Jimenez said her students range from 4 to 60 years old, ranking from white belts to third-degree, senior black belts. She said those who practice Taekwondo gain confidence, respect, discipline and endurance as well as healthy doses of aerobic and leg workouts. Self-defense classes for children and teenagers are also available.

Students learn how to block and control their bodies, Jimenez said. They may also spar, break boards and participate in tournaments depending on their skill level.

Teaching Taekwondo is Jimenez’s favorite part of owning her business.

“Being able to teach someone and seeing them achieve a goal they’ve been struggling to get is the best part of it,” she said.
