Council approved creating the rebate program at its July 7 meeting. The program will allow residents to receive rebates for purchasing and planting approved trees in town and addresses initiatives outlined in the 2024-25 strategic plan.
The town plans to budget $10,000 for the program, Communications Director Melissa Demmitt said in an email.
What you need to know
Rebates in the program are available in three tiers denoted by the minimum tree size, including:
- Up to $50 per 5-gallon tree planted, with a maximum of five eligible for rebate
- Up to $100 per 15-gallon tree planted, with a maximum of five eligible for rebate
- Up to $250 per 30-gallon tree planted, with a maximum of two eligible for rebate
To receive a rebate, trees must be planted between October 1 and May 1, according to town documents. Trees eligible for rebates must come from the town’s approved species list, which is available online.
When applying for a rebate, property owners are required to provide proof of purchase, and in some cases, the rebate can cover having a contractor plant a tree, Luxton said. Funding from the program will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis, per town documents.
Diving deeper
Flower Mound’s program is based on those in Argyle and Denton, respectively, Luxton said. Argyle budgets $10,000 for its program while Denton allocates $31,000.
Funding for Flower Mound’s tree rebate program comes from the tree preservation fund, which developers pay into with tree mitigation fees, Luxton added. Council members will need to approve a budgeted amount for the program, likely $10,000, in the future, Demmitt said.
The plan addresses two initiatives within the 2024-25 strategic plan of the town: to preserve Flower Mound’s tree canopy and encourage residents to plant more trees, officials said.
Going forward
The program is tentatively scheduled to begin this October, Demmitt said. The program will continue through May 30 of the following year or until all funds have been exhausted, she added.
