Flower Mound officials have chosen a name for the veterans memorial plaza that is slated for Peters Colony Memorial Park.

In a unanimous vote, the Flower Mound Town Council approved naming the feature Chief Warrant Officer Douglas A. Brown Veterans Plaza at its March 3 meeting.

The details

Now that Peters Colony Memorial Park is under construction, the town’s veteran liaison board requested the plaza be named after longtime Flower Mound resident Douglas A. Brown. He is a World War II veteran who served for more than two decades in the U.S. Army and has dedicated his retirement years to giving back to the local community, according to town documents.

For example, he served as a local election judge for 18 years and was the sole member of the town’s veteran liaison board for over a decade before it was expanded. In his spare time, he refurbishes computers for veterans and job seekers. To date, he’s refurbished more than 1,300 computers, said Chuck Jennings, the town’s parks and recreation director, at the March 3 meeting.

The background

Town officials have been considering the naming of the plaza for months. At a Feb. 6 meeting, the town’s parks board unanimously approved naming the park after Brown. The plaza will be part of the Peters Colony Memorial Park, which workers started construction on in October. The park is set to be about 3.3 acres at 3201 Peters Colony Road and could be complete by fall 2025, according to previous Community Impact reporting. The park project is costing about $3.36 million and is partially funded through a $750,000 grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

What else?

After the council approved the naming of the park, the mayor issued a proclamation in honor of Brown.

“I’m glad for the recognition, but I didn’t do it for the recognition,” Brown said at the March 3 meeting. “It goes back to what you’re taught early in life, one step forward at a time, and that's what I was trying to do, one step forward at a time and stay busy. If you can help someone when you're staying busy, it's even better.”
