A winter storm watch has been issued for North Texas this week, according to a social media post by Denton County officials. Snowfall accumulations of 3-6 inches are possible Thursday and residents are encouraged to stay prepared.

What they're saying

At a Jan. 6 Flower Mound Town Council meeting, officials said the town was prepared for the cold weather.

“Our emergency management crew does an amazing job in these events,” Town Manager James Childers said at the meeting. “We're always well prepared. Our streets are well taken care of, and that's going to be no different.”

The details

Officials in Flower Mound put out a news release stating there could be snow and ice in the area Wednesday night and possibly through Saturday morning. Flower Mound’s public works crews will pretreat bridges and major intersections starting on Wednesday. Early Thursday, the crews will begin 24-hour operations which will continue as long as necessary. Once snowfall arrives, these crews will begin sanding and plowing streets with a focus on major roadways.

Residents should cover exposed pipes, leave indoor faucets running at a trickle and open cabinet doors to prevent pipe bursts, according to the news release. They should also know where their water shutoff valve is in the event that a pipe does burst. Residents are also encouraged to shut off their irrigation systems to prevent icy sidewalks and roads. To ensure their safety, residents should also make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly, and never use a stove, oven or grill to heat their home. Pets and plants should be brought inside during the cold weather, according to the release.

If facilities close in Flower Mound or there are delays to trash and recycling services, officials will notify residents through social media and the town website.

Highland Village residents can sign up to receive notifications from the city about inclement weather online. Per the city's website, it uses Regroup to notify individuals about severe weather or other emergencies.

Argyle officials announced that Town Hall will be closed Jan. 9, and potentially Jan. 10, because of severe weather, according to a news release.
