The details
At the Dec. 2 meeting, council members unanimously approved a resolution asking LISD officials to postpone their decision on whether to close Garden Ridge Elementary until after the upcoming legislative session when more funds might be injected into the state’s public education system.
The resolution asks LISD trustees to consider the impact that closing the school will have on teachers, children and their families, particularly special education students. It also directs the trustees to consider all other alternatives to keep the school open, as well as the impacts to neighboring campuses if Garden Ridge is closed.
What they’re saying
The town’s school liaison committee gave input on the resolution.
“One of the things that we’re asking in this is to just not make a hasty decision,” said Mindy Bumgarner, a member of the committee. “A big part of this is we’re just asking them to slow down and see exactly what opportunities are going to be in front of them.”
What’s next?
A final decision on the school closure could be made at LISD trustees' Dec. 9 meeting, Town Manager James Childers said.
