There are three projects in Highland Village that drivers should be aware of in terms of changes to transportation and traffic management heading into September.

The details

According to a city news release, the three projects include:
  • Traffic signal improvement project at Highland Village Road and Brazos Boulevard intersection
  • 2022 streets improvement project Phase 2
  • Highland Shores Boulevard asphalt overlay project
Zooming in

Laurie Mullens, the city's director of marketing and communication, said in an email that the traffic signal improvement project was initiated to upgrade the signal with current technology and Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

The news release states the project is complete and the traffic department has set the cycle timing as follows:
  • The signal has a two-minute cycle, meaning that the queue from all four directions will have an opportunity to clear within that two minutes.
  • The northbound and southbound directions—where the most traffic is observed—are provided a maximum of 55 seconds to clear their queue.
  • The eastbound and westbound traffic is allotted 30 seconds each to clear their queue.
Should time be left on the detection of the eastbound and westbound traffic, it will be added to the northbound and southbound traffic direction, thus completing the two-minute cycle.

According to the news release, if the detection is interrupted by preemption of an emergency vehicle or a pedestrian button is activated, that will interrupt the two-minute timing cycle and it could take up to four cycles to reset.

More details

Mullins said the second phase of the 2022 bond's streets improvement project is nearing completion and the contractor, Pavecon, has completed construction on Bexar Drive, Malibu Drive, Sandero Drive, Victoria Drive, Inca Place and Savanna Drive. Work still needs to be completed on Medina Drive and Edgewood Drive.

Mullins said Medina Drive is currently under construction and the contractor is preparing to begin work on Edgewood Drive. The anticipated completion date for these two remaining roads is late September.

What else?

Finally, the news release states the Highland Shores Boulevard asphalt overlay project is nearly complete. The project included the following items:
  • An asphalt overlay of Highland Shores Boulevard from Highland Village Road to just west of Briarhill Boulevard
  • New pavement markings
  • Sidewalk replacements and additions
  • Storm sewer replacements and additions
Mullins said the contractor continues to work on the enhanced crosswalk notification system at the Community Center Drive and Highland Shores Boulevard intersection.
