Several road projects will begin in the area beginning in early 2024.

Upcoming projects

1. Karnes Road reconstruction

This project consists of the improvement of Karnes Road from a two-lane asphalt road to a two-lane concrete road with curb and gutter, from Old Settlers Road to FM 1171. A professional services agreement for design services with Teague Nall and Perkins was approved by Town Council on Dec. 5, 2022. Design is complete. Bids were received July 18, and a construction agreement was awarded at the Sept. 18 council meeting.
  • Timeline: Work is anticipated to start Jan. 8, 2024.
  • Cost: $830,000
  • Funding source: tax increment reinvestment zone
2. FM 1171/FM 2499 right-turn lane project

The Texas Department of Transportation project includes the installation of a westbound right-turn lane at the FM 1171/FM 2499 intersection, right-of-way acquisition, hike and bike trail, utility relocations, and traffic signal upgrades. A professional services agreement for design services was awarded to Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc. on Oct. 3, 2016. During design, alternate funding was applied for and received. Because of funding requirements, the implementing agency was changed from the town of Flower Mound to TxDOT. As part of the local match requirement, the town will fund right-of-way acquisition and project design. TxDOT will fund construction. A design amendment was approved Nov. 15, 2021, to allow for design plan changes required for TxDOT bidding. The project was bid in June 2023.

  • Cost: $358,331 (local match), $860,000 (TxDOT)
  • Funding sources: tax increment reinvestment zone, TxDOT

3. 2022 bond streets improvement project

City staff evaluated the 126 asphalt pavement streets located within the city using a pavement condition index from its street maintenance program. Several streets were identified as failing. The streets are grouped into three construction projects with engineering design ongoing, and the construction phase began in summer 2023. Weather permitting, the goal is to have reconstruction of the identified streets completed by the end of 2025. The city has secured a contractor and is currently constructing Phase 1 of the project. Phase 2 is anticipated to bid in February 2024. Phase 3 is in the preliminary design phase and will coincide with a proposed waterline replacement project.
  • Timeline: 2023-2025
  • Cost: $3.6 million
  • Funding source: certificates of obligation bonds
4. Traffic signal and roadway improvements at Highland Village Road and Brazos Boulevard

This project consists of upgrading the existing traffic signal at this location to current signal technology standards as well as Americans with Disabilities Act standards. City officials are working in conjunction with the city of Lewisville for maintenance of the traffic signal. The project is transitioning to the construction phase. Travelers should expect minor traffic delays, lane closures and detours as the project is constructed.
  • Timeline: Work anticipated to begin early 2024.
  • Cost: $345,000
  • Funding source: 2022 bond projects
