From a chess competition to coffee with the mayor, residents will find plenty to do in Flower Mound, Highland Village and Argyle during January and February.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration

The public can join the Committee to Commemorate M.L. King Jr. Day at the 31st annual celebration. The committee chose the theme “Becoming One.” This civic event is planned as a nonpolitical interfaith event to celebrate the King’s ideals, such as elimination of all forms of prejudice, equality of races and international peace, according to the event description.February

Spring gardening series


The Flower Mound Public Library will host four gardening sessions throughout the month of February. Sessions will take place on Mondays and will provide useful tips and information, according to the event description. The series will be presented by the Denton County Master Gardener Association. Topics and presenters for each session have yet to be announced. Registration, which opens Dec. 18, is encouraged.Play chess

Former U.S. women’s chess champion Alexey Root will play 10 players simultaneously during a chess competition. Root is a lecturer at The University of Texas at Dallas and teaches education courses that explore the uses of chess. Anyone who can win against her will receive a free copy of "Prepare With Chess Strategy," according to the event description. Players will be seated first come, first served as other players finish their games. The event is open to players and spectators of all ages.Daddy-daughter dance

Highland Village will host its annual father-daughter dance. The event includes dinner, dancing and door prizes for participants. Space is limited. Tickets will go on sale Dec. 26 for residents and Jan. 2 for nonresidents. Dress is semiformal.Coffee with the mayor

Highland Village Mayor Daniel Jaworski will have coffee with residents for casual conversation and topics of interest. The mayor holds a monthly coffee conversation on the first Monday of every month.
