Highland Village residents can participate in a tree adoption program to spread Christmas cheer.

The Sad Trees Along the Road season has officially begun, according to a city news release. Residents can bring holiday cheer by decorating trees along public roads.

The details

Those planning to participate this year must follow certain rules, such as choosing a tree in a safe location, the release states. They should also be cautious when crossing roads.

Residents are also advised to:
  • Avoid roads managed by the Texas Department of Transportation, which are FM 407 and FM 2499.
  • Ask permission before decorating a tree located on private property.
  • Follow homeowners association rules and regulations.
  • Use decorations that are not a danger to wildlife, and make sure they are attached securely to the tree.
  • Clean up all decorations by Jan. 3.
