Editor's note: Since this story published Oct. 24, the Diwali festival Oct. 28 at Gerault Park has been postponed because of the weather forecast. No makeup date has been announced yet, according to Flower Mound communications specialist Anna Thorsen.

Flower Mound residents may enjoy a number of family events Oct. 28, including an open house at the Flower Mound Police Department and a 5K run.

Police open house

Residents will be able to see the police department’s vehicle fleet, meet officers and learn more about the department, according to a news release from the town. This year’s event is Halloween themed, so people can bring their kids in costumes so they can trick-or-treat with officers and compete in a costume contest.Diwali: Festival of Lights

The town partners with the Denton County India Cultural Association for this event, which includes music, dance performances, Indian cuisine and street food, vendor booths and more.

Patrons may wear costumes for the event and enjoy carnival games, crafts and prizes.Lakeside 5K and Family Fun Day

The race takes runners and walkers down to Sunset Point before returning to the community lawn for family fun, activities, music, and food, according to a release from Lakeside DFW Land Ltd. Prizes will be awarded at 9 a.m. to the winners of the races and to the best group costume, best single costume, and the best 18-and-under costume. Race-day packets for the Lakeside 5K may be picked up at Trailhead Running Supply, 2600 Lakeside Parkway in Lakeside, from 4-7 p.m. Oct. 27 or on race day starting at 6:30 a.m. The sixth annual event benefits Ally’s Wish, an organization based in Flower Mound that grants wishes to terminally ill mothers with young children. People may register here and may also volunteer or inquire about sponsorships.
