Two candidates are running for the position of mayor in Flower Mound. Incumbent Derek France will face challenger Cheryl Moore.

France was elected in 2021 and is running for his second term. The mayor position is a nonvoting member of the council.

Candidates were asked to answer four questions in 50 words or fewer and avoid attacking opponents. Answers may have been edited or cut to comply with those guidelines, or for style and clarity.

Community Impact is only asking candidates in contested May 4 elections to answer questionnaires.

Why are you running for office?

I'm deeply committed to Flower Mound's future. Over the past few years, I’ve been privileged to lead our town through growth and challenges, keeping our community's spirit and well-being at the forefront. My motivation is fueled by the love for our town and quality of life.

What are the biggest challenges facing the town?

The most significant challenges facing our town are managing sustainable growth while preserving our unique character and ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents. As Flower Mound grows, we face the task of accommodating this growth in a way that maintains our small-town feel and high quality of life.

How do you plan to address these issues?

Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach. For example, for sustainable growth, I plan to work closely our town staff, residents, and businesses to ensure development is thoughtful and aligns with our strategic plan, emphasizing green spaces, community amenities, and infrastructure that supports both new and existing residents.

What would your top priorities be if you are elected?

If re-elected, my top priorities will include further enhancing public safety, promoting responsible and sustainable growth and fostering a vibrant local economy. I’m committed to ensuring that all development reflects our community’s values and contributes positively to our town’s character. Above all, I will listen to and engage with residents.

Why are you running for office?

Our country landscape changed and was replaced with high density and traffic. Businesses struggled as well. I align with our council for lower density, lower taxes and improving businesses. I have the professional and volunteer experience to represent our town and I bring a different perspective to complement this position.

What are the biggest challenges facing the town?

Determining how west Flower Mound will be developed. Bringing vibrant businesses and activities into the Riverwalk. We need to give the residents what they pay for in the PID district. Diversify our revenue streams to lower property taxes. Avoiding development that negatively impacts our infrastructure and safety.

How do you plan to address these issues?

Advocate for no more apartments, preservation of landscape and conservation district. In the Riverwalk, I opposed the extended stay hotel. I will continue to drive conversations and actions for more appealing businesses. Advertise in the Metroplex and brand our town to increase revenue streams. Bring quality commercial, events, and activities.

What would your top priorities be if you are elected?

Proactively engage with local legislators and state funded programs to align us with improvements for our municipality. Engage our community to drive a small-town feel with exciting and interactive events. Expand our revenue streams through sales from outside our area. Bringing people to visit our wonderful town.
