After completing a survey of prekindergarten through fourth grade classroom sizes, Lewisville ISD officials found that 29 classes exceeded the 22-students-per-class size limit.

The details

According to district documents, the Texas Education Agency requires that school districts conduct a class size enrollment survey for prekindergarten through fourth grade. Should a classroom exceed more that 22 students, district officials need to submit a request for exception.

Results from this year’s survey indicated that Lewisville ISD has 29 classrooms spread out over 12 campuses that have more than 22 students.

District documents state that class size waivers have increased over the past three academic years as follows:
  • 2021-22: 13
  • 2022-23: 25
  • 2023-24: 29
The increase in the number of waivers requested is due to teacher shortages across Texas and the country, as stated in district documents.

Zooming in

Lewisville ISD board members approved the class size waivers Oct. 15. If the state grants exceptions, each of the 12 campuses have 31 days after the date the exception is granted to provide parents or guardians with a notice through regular mail or by other means of communication, according to TEA.

District documents state that should any other classes require waivers throughout the year, that information will be provided to Lewisville ISD board members.
